New Jersey - End of Season Race
After a horrible thurday morning crash that left him with tire burn marks on his chin and neck, Tommy
came back on friday with a vengence. He took fastest time in practice and then again in qualifying. At
Superpole, starting last of the ten riders he ended up 2nd over all by 1, 100th of a second. Its gonna be a
great race weekend.
Saturday morning warm up Tommy was his usual slow steady pace till he worked his way into the top
three. With bike set up and ready Tommy for the first time ever started in one of the two front spots. The
rolling start went off well but at the first turn DeSalvo ran off the track leaving Tommy with the front spot.
And he was going. We wer hoping that it was not going to be red flagged since multipl riders went down.
Luckily that didn't happen and Tommy was leading the race. He had said he liked this track since it was
really fast and tecnical. With Herrin and Davis behind him he set a good pace. By the half way point
Tommy and his teamate hooked up together and left the rest of the field. They looked great and hopefully
they will carry this on to next years season. Unfortunatly with 3 laps left Tommy tucked the front end and
his race was over but unhurt.
Sunday was a bit cooler and thankfully so. With the last race of season there was alot of funny stuff going
on on the line up. For one Chris, the suspenstion guru from South Africa was dressed like a masked
wrestler! And Tommys mechanic Gary was dressed as Tommy........ Yes, he bought a wig and wore his
clothes and even walked up on stage with Tommy at the riders presination. Alot of fun and check out the
pics that will be posted soon.
Back to racing. Same thing again at the start. DeSalvo ran wide off track and took other riders with him.
Tommy was in the lead for 2 laps and was sent back to 3rd by Davis and Zemke. Herrin also passed
Tommy on 7th lap putting Tommy in 4th with Fong on his butt. The top guys were pulling away but
Tommy, Herrin and Fong charged back up to them and the swap for leader was changing moment by
moment. It was a great race for the spectators. Fong passed both Tommy and Herrin and was in 2nd but
was over his head and crashed in turn one. ON the 10th lap ( out of 23 ) Tommy was charging toward the
lead again and his times were faster since he was chasing the leaders and catching them. But the next
time around the three front guys came around but not Tommy, he was about 4 seconds behind but still in
4th. He said he saved a high side and his neck came crashing down on his windshield smashing it to
pieces. But he wasn't gonna let go, he wanted to podium. We did not know this at first and were curious
as to why he was slowing down. Thankfully on the monitor we saw he had no windshield and was trying to
tuck down as small as possible. So with 10 8 laps to go Tommy just held on and did the best he could with
out losing any more places. He made it up to Davis and and passed him giving him third and that is where
he finished. A very happy Tommy!. When he rode into the winners circle there was blood all other his
bike and leathers. Looked like he just got out of battle. It was a great winners cicle and nice way to end
the season with both him and his teamate Herrin on the podium. It was really exciting that the fans were
plentiful and really into the racing. THis new track is awsome and look forward to many more events there.
Tommy ended up 8th overall with only single didgets seperating the top ten riders. This by far seems to be
the closest races in a long time. Alot of talent and past champions to make it very interesting. Thanks to
Graves/Yamaha for EVERYTHING ! Chuck, Ollie, Gary, Chris and Rick. Shoei, Cortech and TCX. All the
BEST !
